Lip Sync Exercise

On 23rd of June we did an exercise in groups to teach us how to film and edit a snippet of a music video. The song we had to do was 'Shake It Off' by Taylor Swift, to prepare for the day we learnt the lyrics of the song and got any costumes people wanted to wear when they were performing.

Doll Shot
DSLR with prime lense
When we got into the studio there were three stations set up each with a camera. The first was simply a DSLR on a tripod with a prime lense pointed at a sofa. The second was a Sony NX5 pointed towards a green screen and the last was a dolly shot which had a rock wall set up in front of the camera. We learnt about how to operate the dolly correctly, the most important thing is to keep centered and try as keep as close to the camera as possible because if not the whole rig could tilt over. It was also very important not to walk on the tracks as this would make them not flat so when the camera rolls over it wouldn't be smooth.

On the DSLR because we used a prime lense we had to learn how to get the subject in focus, how you would do this is by getting a tape measure a measuring from the focal point on the camera ,which is on the flash, to the subject you are filming. Then on the lens there are measurements in feet and you simple turn the lense until it matches the measurement you got on the tape measure. The other station was nothing new than what we knew before. What we also had to do was use the clapper which was an ipad you would press play on and loud claps would sound then the music would play.

After filming many different sequences we went up to the edit suit to learn how to sync up the rushes with the music track. The way you would do this is by using the three claps that sound at the beginning of the audio file with the three claps that you would hear in the beginning of the clip, then the audio and the video should be linked. Then after linking around 7 clips that we liked onto the timeline you could simply cut to what clip you wanted at what time in the video. We learnt that it was important not to only cut on the beat but on lyrics, snares and other parts of the music that maybe don't stand out as much as the heavy drum hits, here is what are final result was.
