Negus - Organic and Synthetic Acts in the Music Industry

Negus's theory is that record labels create two types of artists to create a stream of revenue, synthetic acts and organic acts.

Organic Acts

A organic act is a band or artist who writes and creates their own music and was picked up by a record label rather than created by a label for example:Ed Sheeran
The Black Keys
Ellie Goulding
Jack Johnson

These acts are created to give record labels long lasting acts and revenue streams who will always be able to easily sell their new albums as well as their old work. Organic acts are still constructed in some ways though to make them look organic rather than synthetic.

Synthetic Acts

A synthetic act is an artist who has been created by the label and are controlled by the label with the way they look, the music they produce and the way they act for example:
The Cheeky Girls
Aqua
Psy
Rednex

The reason these acts are created by labels is to make a quick profit so they can help fund their organic acts, make a one hit wonder and then move on to a new act. These acts are aimed towards chart listeners, they stay in the charts for a short amount of time and then move on.

On this album cover compared to the other album we can see that their are huge differences, such as the bight colours and the high amount of pink used on the front cover is very different to Amy Macdonalds album. She also has exaggerated eyelashes and her whole face is covered in different colours which makes her look created rather than genuine, this also matches the background and the font used to write the name of the album in. All of this actually helps make her look like a plastic doll rather than an actual person, which helps with the synthetic look rather than an organic artist.
