Genre is used so the audience know what sort of film they are seeing, this allows them to go to see films they prefer rather than ones they might not enjoy as much. Genre also allows the production companies to make films that will appeal more to the audience, for instance successful film companies will stick to making films that make them the most money such as action, comedy and scifi. Smaller companies will experiment with genre to test out new things to audiences.
