Analysis of a Movie Poster

Inception

Inception was released in July 2010 and is about a thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream sharing technology. It was a hugely successful film wining four Oscars for Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Achievement in Sound Editing and Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

The first thing that we see and stands out the most is the title "Inception" this is because it is bright red which is the opposite from the rest of the poster which mainly consists of very blue and cool colors. The color red is also associated with danger telling us that this film could be action based as well as crime. We can also tell that it is going to be an action film as well as a thriller by the use of props that are being held by the characters for example guns are normally associated with action. More hints that this film is also a thriller as well as a crime film is the tag line at the top "your mind is the scene of the crime" this suggests that the crimes being committed revolves around peoples minds hinting that this film might also include aspects of a psychological thriller.

The main image consists of six main characters in a city street, while two of them seem to be armed, the way they are positioned suggest they are all part of the same organization as well as the way they are dressed shows its formal and not social and if they are involved in crime they it's organized. If you look further into the image you can see that the street bends over defying the laws of physics this suggests that reality as been defied or not is all as it seems, this starts to raise questions that the audience wants answers to, who are these people? Why are they armed? why is the world bending over? All of this makes them more interested to going to the watch the film.

The  credits, producer and director are all shown but too small to read, instead of advertising the director the poster advertises the directors previous work, "from the director of The Dark Knight". This is done to draw in the audience by using previous well known films as a form advertising. At the top of the poster there are also several famous actors named such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page, but because of his reputation Leonardo has been given a much bigger name title than the others because he can be used as a much more successful selling point than the other cast members. The poster shows the stars as part of the main image all stood together while Leonardo is at the front suggesting he is the main protagonist and that the film revolves around him. If we also look at the cloths they are wearing we can see that they are all dressed smartly and are wearing suits, except the the woman, this could mean that she is not as professional and is new to the sort of things they do .
