In our thriller opening sequence, one of our key aims was to establish a criminal environment and . A major method in doing this is through exploitation of various different social groups. Much like in most films, these are blunt and obvious stereotypes in order to convey character ideas quickly to an audience.
In our thriller the main characters are a group of men ageing from around 28-40 and are working class criminals who are working up the pecking order. The group of men represent a working class demographic and would help pull in a working class audience because most of the film deals with life as criminals who have been steeling all their life but one wants to stop because of his son being influenced by his actions. We have shown thats they are working class by not giving them the greatest clothing but also by the language one of our characters uses. By using strong language in his situation it tells the audience that he isn't well spoken and is most likely working class.
The vehicle they are in also isn't high quality, it a ford transit van, this shows they're haven't got huge amounts of money to spend on a nice 4X4. On the other hand the bad guys have a nice 4X4 and are well dressed which tells us that whatever organisation they are from they are making a decent amount cash. This shows us that the bad guys in the film have a good lavish life when the criminals have worked from the bottom and up, even though they are still criminals we are more likely to root for them because they have worked hard to get where they are.
The film would also pull in a larger demographic of social classes as well because of the heavy action included in the film which is a element that can get a large audience to go see a film. In our film there is a lot of fast paced action with guns, shouting and car chases which are all conventions of an action film. To emphasise the action we have also used quick cuts which is very common in action films. The film has got intriguing plot lines but doesn't mean to say it's hard to follow so it won't leave people confused when leaving the cinema.
In the opening scene it starts in the van, we used long shots in the van while they were getting ready preparing to stop the car and get the boy back. We did this so that the audience could get to know each character, their personality, see what age and gender they were and work out what kind of power and status they had. By doing long shots at the begging this didn't only allow the audience to work out the characters but also built a lot of suspense as you more about them was revealed over time such as their weaponry and how many of them there were. As soon as the scene heads outside the shots pick up the pace which makes the audience more on edge and make them think about whats going to happen next.
The sound throughout was all diegetic engine sounds running in the background. We did this because we wanted it to sound very realistic and it also lets the audience concentrate on the action and the action only. The sound of a car engine is very low and deep which represents a mans voice, and being a cast of all men we though that it fit very well. It made the thriller opening look much more aggressive and built more tension because it felt like the audience were there.
